Have A Seat

Tuesday, June 16, 2015

Spotted while driving down Shoal Creek Boulevard.

I didn't have my camera on me.

So we got home.

I got the polaroid.

Got in my car.

And went back to Shoal Creek Blvd to get the shot.

Film was still cold when I put it in the camera - not sure if that had anything to do with the tones.

*****

Days are grey and rainy because of a tropical storm named Bill.

Can't say that I'm complaining.

Keeps the temperatures a little lower.

*****

Ho Hum.

Not much else to say really.

Work is busy and I'm pooped.

Just wanted to document this cool ass chair sitting in a field of wildflowers.

Made my day.

“An early morning walk is a blessing for the whole day.”
 - Henry David Thoreau

Thursday Morning

Thursday, June 4, 2015

Ahhhh the lovely sounds of birds chirping and construction workers clanging...

Hmmm...

Do they realize I still haven't had my cup o' coffee yet?

*****

So the first two polaroids above show you just what it's like to deal with expired film.

If you look real closely you may see clouds.

Well.

If you use your imagination you may see clouds.

The last polaroid I used experimental film and it seems pretty normal-ish.

If you see something other than a fence, morning light and shadows, and leaves.

Well.

I'm not sure what you are experimenting with...

But will you share?

Random quote of the week from two guys working behind the counter at a local restaurant:

"I used to race you to the playground everyday, and beat you every time!"

LOL

Just made me smile.

Alot.

*****

So the blue skies and beginning of summer are begging me to shirk my duties and go play.

Seriously considering it...

After I do the dishes and make the bed.

*****

I'll race you to the playground (and I bet you'll win)

Strawberry Jam

Saturday, May 9, 2015

It's Saturday.

We walked the dogs to the park - me holding a cup of coffee and walking Noah ,
Josh working on training Cole to heel "all the time and not just when he wants to... which is never."

Brunched at Hillside Farmacy.

Stopped by the Farmer's Market to pick up Strawberry + Rose Petal Jam.

Josh made basil chicken, sweet potato, avocado, queso fresco, and summer squash "tacos" (we use huge lettuce leaves instead of tortillas these days).

Got my first roll of 35mm film back today.

About to brew another pot of coffee and blissfully zone out over the above mentioned film (see pix in last post).

Plans to dine at Elizabeth Street Cafe tonight... maybe grab a few macaroons...

Hello Saturday.
You are beyond amazing.

Happy Weekend!

Breakfast of Champions - Lemon Blueberry Poppyseed Muffins

My favorite at the moment.

I have one left...

Planning on savoring every last morsel tomorrow morning.

Trying some new coffee brew too.

You know - gotta start the morning off right and make it great!

Oh.

I ordered two swimsuits today in preparation of our trip to Costa Rica.

Bikinis.

BUT.

I'll be wearing a short sleeved rashgaurd.

So almost like a tankini with short sleeves.

Hmmmm...

Did I mention I like muffins.

And I bought bikinis today?

Those don't really go together...

Gracefully at least.

Ahhh well.

Hi May!

You're gonna be epic.

56 Degrees

Tuesday, April 28, 2015

Soooo my scanner kicked the bucket today and I had to use my iphone "scanner app" - which doesn't work so well in low, crappy lighting.

That's my excuse/ disclaimer for the poor polaroids above...

*****

So it's the end of April and it is currently 56 degrees this evening.

I'm by no means complaining.

Just find it funny.

Our crazy Texas weather.

It was pushing 90 degrees about three days ago.

C.R.A.Z.Y.

*****

In other news...

I haven't decided if I like the round frame on polos or not.

I've had a vicious migraine that lingered most of Monday, attacked with a vengence Monday evening, and has proceeded to linger some more all throughout Tuesday.

Blah.

On a brighter note...

We took a walk this evening to the dog park and got to enjoy the over cast skies and cool weather.

Noah was frisky like a two year old crazy puppy (ahem, Cole).

We all had pep in our steps - and the wildflowers are still blooming!

I bought a "new to me/ vintage" Yashica TL Electro X film camera and plan to take that out this week for some shooting....

Did I mention I have slippers on and it's 56 degrees?!

Intoxicating Good

Wednesday, April 22, 2015

So for some reason my anxiety has resurfaced.

Probably due to health stuff going on, but either way, it sucks.

I've gained some weight because I'm stressed.

I'm dealing with eczema on my face.

It hurts.

It's raw.

Itchy.

Red and blotchy.

Each day I head out and always feel like I'm not all there... or that I'd rather be home hiding...

Acupuncture is definitely helping.

So is the cicada allergy drops (so gross but it's helping!)

I adore my skin products from Marble & Milkweed - they make my skin feel almost normal again.

Normal.

As if there ever where a normal.

My normal just means I can feel pretty again.

It sounds so superficial.

But seriously.

When you don't feel good about yourself it's hard to be confident in anything you do.

I also don't know why it's so hard to just walk the dogs every day.

Or practice yoga...

I enjoy both of those activities but it has been so difficult to find the motivation.

So I'm taking super tiny baby steps.

One day at a time.

Today I took 10 minutes and enjoyed warm chai tea,

and admired the jasmine vines growing along the front fence.

The smell.

Intoxicating.

Slightly overcast, a little breeze.

The dogs barking at the construction workers across the alley.

I know I can get better.

I know I can be healthy (loose the pounds).

I just have to keep taking those baby steps.

Just had to write this all down.

On a lighter note.

I'm so happy I'm shooting film again.

It's definitely light in my darker moments.

Hoping to look back upon this post and smile.

And give this sad gal a big hug and say,

"You've got this - just keep your chin up - your prayers daily - and cherish those moments -

make ALL those moments count toward something real and something good."

Snapshots

Sunday, April 12, 2015

Little snippets of the past week.

From rambling roses and blurry cupcakes, to coffee and fresh farm eggs.

One damn delicious chocolate cupcake...

I savored every last morsel... even thought about scraping the chocolate off of the wrapper!

Should I admit that?

*****

It's been feeling like Seattle lately, except for the humid mid-80s temperatures.

The sun keeps playing hide and seek with the clouds.

I'm sippin' on some Argus Ginger Perry (Pear Ginger Fizzy Adult Beverage).

Laughing about crazy Cole and his chewing fetish...

You know to the point of shredding not one, but two wayward balls that found themselves in our yard by the neighboring children.

Good deed for the week award goes to Josh for replacing the shredded nerf football and making a kid smile.

Brownie points for the exact nerf football replacement - color and all.

Happy Sunday!

Garden Views

Monday, March 30, 2015

Still a work in progress, but my little herb garden is coming along quite nicely.
My handsome built the raised garden bed and then I got to work.

Lots of weeding, digging, dirt shoveling, and a couple of trips to the local Shoal Creek Nursery and "little herbz" were welcomed into our world.

I'm smitten.

Current plans for this new herbz garden are:
-  iron arbor and fence to the entrance to make it feel more "secret."
- lounge seats and vintage metal glider
- redefining this once lost back area of the yard and turning it into my yoga retreat and meditation spot, so the more zen the better...
-  some kind of water feature
- more tidbits to come soon!!

xoxo

PS - check out my new "in the round" impossible polo film - adds some extra whimsy to the traditional square!

Close Your Eyes

Friday, March 27, 2015

First things I notice when I close my eyes.

birds.

mainly doves.

but there is this little song bird singing a happy tune to my right.

that happy tune must reflect on the day.

What a day!

I know you can't tell from the polaroid above, but the sky was magnificent!

When I open my eyes.

vibrant green leaves dot endless blue skies.

the little song bird - a mockingbird - copying tunes I'd imagine - but lovely none the less.

a twitchy squirrel casts unintelligible curse words at the dogs, while dangling from a tree branch safely beyond reach of Cole the known killer.

*****

Date night with my handsome this evening.

An ole' favorite wine - Syrah from Toulocay - to accompany.

We will dine under the twinkle lights tonight.

Spring Roses

Wednesday, March 25, 2015

The skies were brilliant blue today.

Big puffy clouds.

Fresh, bright green leaves on trees.

While on the road, it felt like a dream.

Like I was in one of those paintings.

The ones that show rolling hills, horizons for miles, and landscapes dotted with color.

*****

Our little rose bush is blooming.

Showcasing bold, fuchsia buds.

I brought one inside to adorn a little bud vase I purchased a while back from one of my fav local spots, Spartan.

Planning on only displaying my greenery & blooms in that little vase.

One of my current projects is a raised herb and flower garden.

My handsome fella built the raised bed.

So now I'm tending to soil and planning a layout.

I hope to include wildflowers and all kinds of culinary herbs.

My little secret garden, tucked in the far corner of the back of the yard.

*****

I stocked up on some fun polaroid film this past week.

My little SX-70 whispered that it missed spending time with me.

So I obliged with a whole heart to never let it feel so neglected again.

Which means...

More polaroids to share on my ole' blog!

I'll raise a glass to that.

Until next time...  (which will be in the very near future)

Hit Pause

Monday, March 23, 2015

Attempting to slow down, pause, and just notice the space around me.
The first shot was taken in the morning.  I was sitting at the island and noticed how beautiful the apples looked basking in the warm morning glow.
The second shot was taken during the "heat" of the afternoon - sun blazing in through the windows in the living room - hey it did reach 82 degrees today.
My seester has been in town and today she was supposed to leave, but it was just too pretty.
So while I worked I gave her the assignment to enjoy a smoothie in the park, under the big oak trees with a picnic blanket and reading material.
Then, we dined like rock stars at Blue Star Cafe - best vegetable bowl with cheese grits!
Topped off the early part of the evening with a stroll around the neighborhood with the pups.
And I'm about to stay up late... watch a movie and eat some damn good chocolate.

Thanks for the beauty today, Monday.
You were a good one.

Solitude

Friday, March 13, 2015

So the creamy-milky quality polaroid film creates gets me.
Every... single... time.
I also love how glass objects always seem to harmonize beautifully and take center stage.
Even if over-exposed.
I'm smitten.

Warm, late afternoon light on our navy locker trunk/ coffee table in the living room.
Josh and I have both been battling illnesses this past month.
So drinking lots of good ole H2O, reading, and trying to sleep to dismiss the pain of sickness.

Looks like pizza, salad and Vampire Diaries are on the Friday night menu.
Then probably back to sleep.

Looking forward to more energy... wherever it may be hiding.

Cheers to the weekend.

A Little Sunny Daze

Thursday, March 12, 2015

Why hello there.  It's definitely been too long!
Today the sun came out after what seemed like an eternity of grey - and I LIKE grey!
So cheers to sunshine, spring weather, and death to all mosquitoes.

Yosemite in Polaroid - A Spring Wedding 2014

Tuesday, May 6, 2014

Sigh.  Yosemite.  What a magnificent place to host a wedding.
Our sweet friends, Bryan & Jacki were married on Friday, May 2nd at tiny chapel across from the very Yosemite Falls Josh proposed to me at almost 12 years ago.
It was such a beautiful event - the reception held at the Ahwahnee Hotel - in a quaint room dotted with sunshine yellow and creamy white floral arrangements and pure white linens, lit by candlelight and flooded with natural light from the huge picture windows showcasing spring in Yosemite.  Breathtaking!  Not to mention the radiant newlyweds - high on life and love.  I'm filled with gratitude that we were invited.

We arrived on Wednesday - late afternoon - exhausted from tying up work, shuttling dogs to Floresville to stay with the grandparents and the usual scuffle of dealing with airports and travel...

Josh of course found the perfect craft brewery just outside the park in Oakhurst - South Gate Brewery - where we quickly made ourselves comfortable and decided to eat an early dinner (we are talking 4PM dinner...).  We arrived at Arnett's log cabin at the Redwoods in Yosemite around 7 PM and our plans of UNO tournaments and enjoying the crisp, spring mountain air under the stars on the front deck were quickly reduced to a hot shower and snoring like bears in bed by 8 PM.

Early to bed really does mean early to rise.  I awoke to the sound of bacon crackling... followed by the wailing of the smoke detector - clearly very sensitive to bacon at 6 AM.
Thursday was our day of hiking - and we were both so excited to get out there - even with my damn fear of bears.
A few stops to enjoy the views along the way to the Valley and by 9:30 AM we were at the start of the trailhead at Happy Isles. Our plan was to hike to both Vernal and Nevada Falls and take the scenic John Muir trail back around and connect back to the footbridge on the Vernal Falls trail.  The trailhead starts at 4,000 feet and to the first waterfall, Vernal Falls, it's another 1,000 feet up along the glacial white water melt.  Part of the trail is called The Mist Trail (although you don't just get misted on... we were pretty soaked).
Once at the top of Vernal Falls you can literally stand at the edge (with a barrier) and look down the falls - I let Josh take those photos with the digital camera since I'd already slipped a few times on the loose gravel and really didn't feel like loosing my footing at the top of a waterfall.  A short break to enjoy the view and a couple of packs of 100 calorie almonds and we were off to lose the majority of the crowd and continue our way up to Nevada Falls.  From Vernal Falls it's another 1,900 feet up with the last trek a steep incline with a series switchbacks consisting of narrow rock steps cut out of the mountain with no defined ledge or railing... I didn't look down.
Getting to the top was so worth it though - the views are awe-inspiring and with the sound of the waterfall now below us, we decided to take a nap under the pine trees.
Best. Nap. Ever.
Our growling stomachs finally got the best of us - probably the closest thing I came to in regards to a bear sighting was just having Josh's tummy growl...  so we made our descent along the John Muir trail back to Happy Isle and Camp Curry.  Where we proceeded to devour a pizza, hot dog, milk and chocolate chip cookie...  hey it's vacation and it was after 3PM and we had only almonds in our bellies...  I just find it humorous that we had the option of beer, but wanted milk instead.

The rest of the afternoon was spent recovering from the hike, sleeping in the car, and leisurely strolling around the park, waiting for the Rehearsal Dinner that evening.  The dinner was held at the picnic tables at the foot of Yosemite Falls complete with brown bags filled with all kinds of goodies.  It couldn't have been a more perfect way to end the evening.
Our drive was about an hour back to the cabin along winding roads so we left slightly after 8 PM and arrived just in time to meet up with good friends who were also attending the wedding the next day and were staying at the Beckett cabin just across the street.

Friday before the wedding was our relaxing day.  We got to sleep in until 8 AM!  Eggs and bacon without the smoke detector sounding was pleasant as well...  We took a stroll with Adam and Amy to the Mariposa Grove and witnessed huge, 3,000 year old Sequoias - makes you feel pretty tiny.
I was able to squeeze in some reading on the deck under the sunshine and cool crisp breeze before the wedding  and then we were off to the Valley again to celebrate Bryan and Jacki's wedding.

Saturday was a bit of a blur - lots of driving all for the sake of Russian River Brewing Company and some good ole' Pliny the Elder beer and a 25 minute "detour" because I dropped my wedding ring into a small groove under the seat of our rental car and we had a heck of a time retrieving it - which almost caused us to miss our visit to the brew pub... but we made it, had an hour and a half at the brewery, drove our happy booties back to Sacramento and flew back to ATX and passed out on our bed a little after midnight.

Whew!  It was definitely a memorable trip - far too short - we plan on going back for more hiking.
Until then... a few polaroids I took while on our hike on Thursday and one from the grove on Friday morning.  Josh got a ton of photos on the ole' digital camera, but I'll share those on FB.

The polaroid below is from an overlook on the way to Glacier Point.  It was hard for me to wrap my head around the fact that in less than two hours Josh and I would be hiking up those two waterfalls in the photo below...  so freaking cool!

On our way into the valley, you drive through a tunnel and are rewarded with Tunnel View.

On the way up to Nevada Falls - we are about 6,000 feet up at this point and the rocky stairs are about to begin again...

Making our descent - my favorite vista view of the hike along the John Muir Trail - looking towards Nevada Falls and Liberty Cap.

The trees are pretty big - too big for my little polaroid frame.

Ghost Town

Wednesday, April 2, 2014

Wandering through old memories from my Daily Cupcake blog - just like finding a long forgotten diary... except there aren't scribbles of how much I adore so and so and how angry my sister made me when she "borrowed" my clothes without asking...

I really need to keep up with this blog.  Looking back through photos and reminiscing while listening to Duran Duran... ok, I'll stop.  But really - I NEED to keep this blog up.

So much going on these days.  Where to start?

Let's take a trip to NOLA.

New Orleans has quite the appeal.
History oozing out of the sidewalks... among other things.
Yes, it's dirty.
I'd advise against flip flops... although I've done it before.
The food.
Don't count your calories here but lord help me.
Shrimp and grits.
Sylvain and everything on their menu.
The music and Frenchman Street.
You really can just grab your beverage of choice, hit the streets and listen to music.
The cemeteries.
Josh and I spent at least 2 hours paying our respects at Lafayette Cemetery #1.

*********************

When we visited in late January to celebrate both of our birthdays - it was freezing temperatures, sleet and ice AND we walked our happy bottoms everywhere.
We stayed bundled up and I only almost slipped twice...
Even had praline & rum cheesecake with coffee for breakfast one morning when we were "iced in."
Our days consisted of strolling the freezing streets around the Quarter, popping in for a bite to eat, sipping on spirits to warm us up, enjoying the museums, art, music and more food and sips.
We stayed just on the outskirts of the French Quarter in a lovely historic home on a quaint street.
On Saturday, the sun decided to come out - that is when we headed to the Garden District.
Strolled through old Victorians and 19th century mansions.
Brunch at Coquette.
The nights lit up with all sorts of fun characters.
We spent the majority of two evenings on Frenchman Street at d.b.a. and the front patio of Marigny Brasserie complete with fantastic people watching opportunities and free jazz music all night.
We rode the Carousel Bar a few times at Hotel Monteleone.
Sipped more spirits by candlelight at Lafitte's Blacksmith Bar.
Remember, we had to stay warm...

Really one of the best min-trips we've taken.

********************

Sadly I only took a handful of Polaroids - mainly at Lafayette Cememtery #1 since the sun was out and the skies brilliant.  With the majority of our days cloaked in overcast skies and the expired film I brought needed sunlight - I knew not much would come out exposed well.  I did take one shot in the Quarter - totally over exposed but I love the "ghost-like" quality it possesses.

Hope to visit again soon... both NOLA and the ole' blog.

Until next time friends...

xoxo
